Precision Agriculture World Wide Will Feel Affects of US FCC Ruling

Precision Farming Could Be Affected by the FCC

If the Fed. Communications Commission extends a waiver to a group making an attempt to implement wireless broadband countrywide, the Global Positioning system as we know it might be seriously influenced.

A company called LightSquared, which is backed by the Harbinger Capital Partners hedge fund, is working to launch a wireless broadband network. Their goal is to build out countrywide 4G ancillary earthly element (ATC) network that would cover 260 million folk in the United States by 2014.

In January, the FCC granted LightSquared a conditional waiver, which allows them to proceed with the project in a limited fashion while a working group conducts research to figure out whether the LightSquared network and GPS can coexist with no interference.

This may have a serious impact on many technologies, particularly those in precision agriculture that rely on GPS technology for everything from planting seed to the focused application of manure and insecticides on crops. Interference with this technology might end in heavier costs for seed, manure, fuel and in the end labor.

"As an association that represents agricultural areas of West Texas, we understand the necessity for countrywide wireless broadband access," Plains Cotton Growers, Inc, Executive Vice President Steve Verett announced."However, it should not be at the expense of so many who could suffer negative effects."

With farming, others affected by GPS interference would include the U. S. military, emergency responders, and the aviation industry.

"In addition to the potential implications for farming, we are concerned for all GPS technologies," Verett related."While we appreciate what LightSquared is attempting to achieve, there's not yet enough evidence that there'll be no GPS interference with their technology."

Verett went on to claim that till it can be indisputably proven that there would be no interference, PCG will not support the FCC's action and now is in the procedure of submitting a letter to the FCC.

Corporations such as John Deere already have sent letters to the FCC, and U.S. Reps. Randy Neugebauer, Collin Peterson, Steve Austria and Ralph Hall co-wrote a letter to the FCC requesting that the FCC only grant last approval to LightSquared if the company can incontestably demonstrate that their offer won't meddle with GPS technology."

A final report is to be submitted by June 15 after which a call will be manufactured by the FCC referring to the continuation of the LightSquared project.
